Stanley Howard Peterson 91, passed away after a brief illness Saturday. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Beverly G. (Monroe) Peterson.

He was the son of Ernest S. and Amy L. (Benson) Peterson of Whitman and brother of the late Melvin Peterson of Augusta GA. A lifelong Whitman resident, Stanley was a graduate of Whitman High School, Class of 1937.

During the second world war, he worked at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, followed by a stint at Machine Craft of Whitman. After attaining his Master Electrician License, he moved on the Carr Fastener/TRW in Cambridge where he was the plant’s Electrical Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement.

Active in the Masonic Lodge, Stanley served in numerous capacities, including Secretary of Puritan Lodge for over 50 years, and as a Past President of the Masonic Secretaries Association. He was also Past Master, Past District Deputy Grand Master and Past President of Worshipful Masters Association. He was a member of the Scottish Rites Valley of Boston.

Mr. Peterson was a member of the United Methodist Church in Whitman, where he and Beverly were married in 1942. He served on several church committees including the church Finance Committee and was a church Trustee.

Stanley leaves his children Norman S. Peterson and his wife Cheryl, of Cherry Hill, NJ, Gail J. MacAuslan and her husband James of Brockton, and John M. Peterson and his wife Debra, of Foxboro; eight grandchildren, Jeff and April Peterson, Tracy, Bryan and Adam MacAuslan, and Meridien, Wyatt and Rory Peterson; and six great-grandchildren: Joshua, Morgan, Colby, Ayden, Katelyn and Adriana.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 4 at 10am in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St (Rt 58 at the rotary), in Whitman. Visitation calling hours will be on Tuesday, April 3 from 4-8pm.A Masonic service will be held at 7:00PM.Donations may be made in his name to the United Methodist Church, 503 South Ave, Whitman, MA 02382

Whitman – Frances A. (Avery) McPhail 72, of longtime resident of Whitman died Sunday April 8 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of Robert E. McPhail, Sr.

Born in Whitman and raised in Rockland she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Rena A. (Bennett) Avery and a graduate of Rockland High Class of 1958.

As a resident of Whitman for over 45 years Frances had worked for over 15 years as a packer for the former USM Corporation of Whitman.

She was truly an avid reader, enjoyed playing bingo and was a loyal fan of all the Boston sport teams. However her greatest joy came from the time spent with her family and following the many sporting events of her much-loved grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Robert she is survived by her children Robert E. McPhail, Jr. and his wife Sherry of Pembroke, Karen Hunter and her husband Jerold of Whitman, Scott McPhail and his partner Charles Westerfield of Florida and Shawn McPhail of Whitman, and her brother James Avery of Whitman, and her sister Shirley Azevedo of East Bridgewater. She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she adored Joshua, Brandon, Amanda, Jared and Shawn, her great grandchildren Michael, Nathan and Travis as well as several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late William and Edward Avery, Beatrice Borges, Gladys Derochea and Dorothy Coombs.

Her funeral service will be held Thursday April 12 at 11:30 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow at 2:30 PM in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday April 11 from 4-8 PM.

Brockton – Helen (Benton) Perry 94, died Sunday April 22 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late Ralph H. Perry.

Born and raised in Brockton she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Emma (Rounds) Benton and had attended Brockton schools.

Helen had been a resident of Whitman for over 35 years and had worked many years in the shoe industry at the former Montello Heal and P&S Leather both of Brockton.

Helen had always enjoyed baking and happily shared her “treats” with family.

She is survived by her loving daughter Nancy Leonard of Whitman and her beloved grandchildren Michael Leonard of Wayland, Laurence Leonard of Whitman, and Francine Burns of Randolph. She is also survived by her six great grandchildren Hunter, Mallory, and Bryan Leonard and Madison, Roan and Meghan Burns as well as many nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Laurie Murphy and sister of the late Ralph Benton, Jr., Elsie Copeland, Barbara Packard and Margaret Brown.

Her funeral service will be held Friday April 27 at 11 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Thursday April 26 from 6-8 PM

Whitman – Martha M. (Zoobkoff) Hobill 90, died Sunday April 22 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late George W. Hobill, Jr.

Raised in Whitman, she was the daughter of the late Trophim and Elizabeth (Osolin) Zoobkoff and a graduate of Whitman High School.

In her early years Martha had worked as a bookkeeper for the well-known C. Crawford Hollidge of Boston.

As a lifelong resident of Whitman, Martha had also worked as an assembler at the former Handy-Hannah Products of Whitman and later in the Tax Collectors office and as a teacher’s aide for the Whitman schools.

She had been a longtime and active member of the First Baptist Church and the Immanuel Baptist Church.

She enjoyed knitting and cooking, but her greatest joy came from the time spent with her family.

She is survived by her loving children Jonathan Hobill of Bourne, David Hobill of Canada and Faith Kalinowski of Maryland. She is also survived by four grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Edward, John and Joseph Zoobkoff.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours to be held Thursday April 26 from 4-7 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date.

Donald E. Libby, 81 of Whitman, passed away peacefully May 11th, after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to Barbara J. (Pratt) Libby.

Donald was born in Abington and was the last of 16 children born to the late Herbert and Elena (Corbett) Libby.

He worked at the Whitman Tack Factory, Bay State Nursery, Ward and Johnson Builders and finally at Boston Whaler as a supervisor and retired from Boston Whaler when they moved to Florida.

Donald enjoyed bowling, motor cycling, back packing in the White Mountains bingo and reading. He also hooked rugs, which he proudly displayed on walls and floors. Donald also helped support the Indian Affairs.

He will be sadly missed by all especially, our pet dog Abby.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara, his children, Stephen Libby and Sandra Smith both of Whitman, Donna Carpenter of Pembroke and the late Bruce Libby whom passed away 11 years ago :also 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

His memorial service will be held on Saturday May 19th at 10:30AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, 5 Manley St., West Bridgewater, MA. 02379.

Eleanor C. (Anderson) Bowden, 80, of Bridgewater, formerly of Whitman, passed away surrounded by her family in the St. Joseph’s Manor in Brockton after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of Roland S. Bowden.

She was the daughter of the late Reinhold and Doris (Touche) Anderson born in Manchester, NH., brought up in Deerfield, NH and attended Deerfield Schools. She was also a graduate of Salem Hospital School of Nursing.

She had been a resident of Whitman since 1964 before moving in with her daughter to Bridgewater 6 years ago.

Eleanor worked as a Maternity nurse for 45 years and 33 of those years she worked for Brockton Hospital. She was also an active participant for the Compassionate Friends, who help families that have lost a child.

In addition to her husband Roland, she is survived by her daughter Karen Long and her husband Thomas of Bridgewater, her brother David Anderson of Virginia, her grandchildren Zachary and Audrey; also several nieces. She was also the mother of the late Steven and Nancy Bowden.

Her services will be held on Thursday May 17th at 11:00AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Interment will follow in the Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree, MA. Norma I. (King) Kelliher, 87, of Abington passed away Saturday May 26th after a period of failing health.

She was born in Hanson, brought up in Whitman, daughter of the late Calvin and Ethel (Burke) King. Norma was a graduate of Whitman High School class of 1943.

She moved to Abington and raised her family. Norma worked as an executive stenographer for the Foxboro Company for 12 years, also worked for the Abington Council on Aging and Standard Products in Whitman.

Norma was a member of the United Church of Christ in Abington. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening and most of all her family.

She is survived by her children, T. Michael Kelliher and his wife Carol of Abington, David Kelliher and his companion Hildy Margolis of Rockland, Louise Burden and her husband Jim of Cranston, RI and Laurie Davis of Groveton, NH, her brother Richard King of NC ; also 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Charles, Calvin and Frank King and Lillian Segrist.

Robert J. Dexter, 88 of Whitman passed away peacefully in the company of his family, Friday, June 1st. He was the loving husband of Vera (Stewart) Dexter, having recently celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Bob was born in Whitman where, together with his wife Vera, he later designed and built his own home. He was educated in the Whitman Schools. He was the son of the late Francis and Mary (Crowley) Dexter.

He served in the United States Army in WWII, as a medic and was part of the famous Anzio Beach Landing.

After the war, he worked in sales for Oscarson’s Upholstering Company of Brockton. He bought the business in 1970 and relocated to Whitman. He ran a successful upholstery business for over 30 years, making many long-time customers and friends.

Bob was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Whitman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving daughters: Sharon D. Murray married to Dennis of Whitman, Jill LeBlanc, partner of Dr. John O’Brien of Carver and Hingham; grandfather of Sara M. Deeb married to Michael of Bridgewater and Laura B. Murray of Whitman; great-grandfather of Madison G. Deeb of Bridgewater. He was also the brother of the late Helen Stork, Margaret (Betty) Johnson and John (Bud) Dexter and preceded in death by his son-in-law Richard LeBlanc.

His funeral will be held on Thursday June 7th at 11:00AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte 58 @the rotary) Whitman. Interment will be follow in the Fern Hill Cemetery, Hanson, MA. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 6th from 4:00-7:00PM.

Zephyrhills, Florida – Richard W. Strang 83, formerly of Whitman, passed away suddenly of June 7, 2012 in Florida. He was the beloved husband of the late Beatrice (Gomes) Strang.

He was born in Whitman, son of the late Elmer W. and Beatrice (Quigley) Strang

Richard was a Whitman resident all his life, until he retired to sunny Zephyrhills. He was an active member of his church and a volunteered in his community.

He served his country in the United States Army as a Corporal from 1947-1950.

Richard was a truck driver for Cavicchi’s in Whitman for 20 years and also for the Pepsi Corporation for 14 years.

He will be missed by his four children, Peggy Nadoff, wife of Barry of Louisville KY, Denise Menard, wife of Craig of Brockton, MA, Karen MacKenzie wife of Jim of Whitman, MA, and Norman Strang, husband of Patty of Wareham, MA, along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and close friends.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend his graveside services on Monday July 9th at 10:00AM in the Fern Hill Cemetery, High St., Hanson, MA.

John J. Strangis, Sr., age 72, of New Bedford, died unexpectedly, Friday July 6, 2012. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late Armand and Rose L. (Coit) Strangis. John was a graduate of Brockton High School, class of 1958, and received his Associates degree from Massasoit Community College in 1977. He had been employed by Plymouth Rubber Company, Canton, MA and Eastern Mass Street Railway Company in Brockton as a mechanic. In 1966 he joined the Brockton Police Department and had been a Police Officer for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1989. He had been a longtime resident of Whitman, Sarasota, FL and most recently resided in New Bedford. John enjoyed spending time laughing and joking with family and friends, sports, music and was a fan of Elvis Presley.
He is survived by his children, John J. Strangis, Jr. and Lori J. Strangis both of Brockton, and Anthony P. Strangis of New York; two grandchildren Krystle M. Strangis and Riley Strangis; a sister Mary R. (Sargo) Canty of Lakeville, Armand “Sonny” Strangis Jr. and his wife Geraldine of Whitman; his former wives Eleanor M. “Ellie” Strangis of Brockton and Patricia Strangis of Fairhaven and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Ivy L. Bell, Beatrice M. (Bell) Fisher and Pearl L. Strangis.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Thursday 4-7pm. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Whitman – James J. Doyle 80 a resident of Whitman for over 54 years, died unexpectedly Monday July 9. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley M. (Torrey) Doyle.

Born in Dorchester and raised in North Quincy he was the son of the late Edward and Mary (Flaherty) Doyle and a graduate of North Quincy High.

Jim had been a proud veteran of the Korean War having served in the US Air Force from 1952-1956.

Before his retirement, Jim had worked for over 40 years as a supervisor for Boston Gear Works.

He was an avid collector of stamps and coins and enjoyed watching the birds. He loved his yard and working in his gardens, but his greatest joy came from the time spent with his family and following the many sporting events of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving children Karen Sullivan and her husband Stephen of Hanson, Kevin Doyle of Whitman and Kent Doyle and his wife Kerin of Ludlow, MA his brother Edward Doyle and his sisters Mary O’Brien, Kathleen Roskott, Margaret Doyle and Barbara Leggatt. He is also survived by his six grandchildren and four great grandchildren whom he adored, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Michael Doyle.

West Bridgewater-Anna A. (Schultz) Edlund, 95, formerly of Whitman, died peacefully July 10th at Life Care Center of West Bridgewater. She was the wife of the late Ralph L. Edlund.

Born in Boston August 3, 1916, she grew up in Dorchester, graduating from Dorchester High School for Girls in 1932. For many years she was a sales person for Jordan Marsh Co. She was Noble Grand of the American Lodge of Rebekah.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Robert A. Edlund and his wife Barbara of Hanover, Richard Edlund of Pembroke, and Nancy L, Gibbs and her husband Lloyd of Foxboro.

She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and many great- grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later.

Whitman – Irene A. (Fasci) Cistaro 93, died Friday July 13 after a period of failing health. She was the former wife of the late Orendo Cistaro.

Born in Quincy and raised in Weymouth she was the daughter of the late Sebastian and Angelina (Practtico) Fasci and a graduate of Weymouth High, Class of 1937.

As a resident of Whitman for most of her life, Irene had been a communicant of the Holy Ghost Church and a member of the Whitman Senior Citizens and a Vice President for the Golden Ages Club of Whitman. Prior to her retirement she had worked many years as an assembler for United Shoe Machinery of Whitman.

She loved to cook and crochet and enjoyed sharing these talents with her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and treasured the time spent with her children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving children Rose Marie Bean and her husband Larry of Carver and Orendo “Joe” Cistaro and his wife Evie of AZ, and her grandchildren Diane Hanson, Patricia Bean, Kristin Hicks, Suzanne Hicks, Traci Duhamel, and Gini Schwab. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Joshua, Jessica, and Eric Duhamel, Zachary and Katherine Griffiths, William, Benjamin, Olivia and Charlie Hicks and Jake Schwab as well as several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Angela I. Cistaro, grandmother of the late Joseph Cistaro and sister of the late Josephine Cavallo, Mary Mokillo, Eleanor Mignosa, and Cecelia Fasci.

Whitman – Ann M. O’Brien 78 died peacefully on Thursday July 19.

Born and raised in Quincy she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (McGuiness) O’Brien and a graduate of North Quincy High.

Ann had attended Boston University and Bentley College School of Accounting, and had worked for over 22 years as a bookkeeper, working for 15 years as the assistant bookkeeper, vice-president and general manager for the former House of Old Malineau a wine distributor in the Fenway section of Boston.

Before her move to Whitman, to reside with her nephew and family, Ann had been a fifty year resident of Hanson. As a longtime resident of Hanson she had served as registrar of voters, and until her retirement in 1991 she had worked as the chief dispatcher and fire alarm operator for the police and fire of Hanson and Duxbury for over 15 years.

Ann loved baseball and was a lifelong and avid Red Sox fan.

She is survived by four nephews, one niece and five great nephews. She was the sister of the late Barbara Ellis, niece of the late Winnie McGuiness, and aunt of the late Gary Lunin.

Her funeral service will be held Tuesday July 24 at 10:30 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary circle) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 11 AM in St. Joseph the Worker Church, Hanson.
