Whitman- Anne L. (Halloran) McLean 91, died Thursday February 14 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late Hugh J. McLean. Born in Fall River and raised in Quincy she was the daughter of the late John P. and Margaret (Duggan) Halloran, and a graduate of Quincy High School. Anne had been a resident of Whitman for the past ten years and was a communicant of the Holy Ghost Church, and an active member of the Whitman Senior Center. She enjoyed shopping, trips to Foxwoods, and had bowled in local bowling leagues in the area. She was a talented knitter and willing shared the items she created with family and friends. She is survived by her loving son Donald McLean and his wife Jean of Whitman, her grandchildren Peter McLean and his wife Andrea and Kathryn Wallace and her husband Sean, her great grandchildren William and Ashley McLean, her sister Dorothy O’Brien of Falmouth and her sister-in-law Penelope Halloran of Kingston as well as many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Jack Halloran, Mary Ilgen and Margaret Norton. Her services will be held Thursday February 21 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. A private burial will take place in the MA National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday February 20 from 5-7 PM. East Bridgewater – Dana L. Ruoff 80, formerly a longtime resident of Whitman, died Monday March 11 after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan (Pierce) Ruoff. Born in Waltham and raised in Whitman he was the son of the late Vernet and Doris (Bishop) Ruoff and a graduate of Whitman High School, Class of 1950. He was a proud veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean War from 1952-1955. He continued his education, graduating from Bentley College and had worked for several years for the former People’s Savings Bank of Brockton, beginning as a teller, and “rising through the ranks” to the position President. He is survived by his loving children Scott Ruoff, Kyle Olsen and Heidi Adams all of Whitman and Kirby Ruoff of East Bridgewater. He is also survived by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Vern Ruoff and Louise MacBeth. By request of the family all services are private. Muriel H.M. (Evans) Lawrence, 64 of Marshfield formerly of Whitman, passed away on April 7th after a brief illness. She was the wife of the Christian Lawrence.Born in Dorchester, daughter of the late Benjamin and Marthe ( ) Evans She was a longtime resident of Whitman before moving to Marshfield 20 years ago. Muriel worked as an insurance agent for Austin Insurance in Whitman and Mass Bay Insurance in Marshfield for many years. She attended St. Patrick’s Church in Brockton. Muriel enjoyed playing cribbage, poker and all types of card games. She is survived by her daughters, Michelle Young and her husband John and Danielle Osborne, all of Whitman, her longtime companion Paul Hoffman of Marshfield ;also 5 grandchildren. By request of the family all services will be private.

Bessie F. (Look) Jenkins, 91 of Whitman, passed away on April 7th surrounded by her family, after a period of failing health. She was predeceased by Clinton T. Jenkins, her husband of 62 years, Paula Riskin, her daughter and Evelyn Churchill, her sister. She leaves behind her 3 children and their spouses; Douglas & Diane Jenkins of Marston Mills, MA, Marsha & Wayne Alden of Whitman, MA; David & Susan Jenkins of Auburn, NH and her son-in-law Glenn Riskin of So. Easton, MA; her sister Phyllis Flood of Whitman, MA; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Bessie was a graduate of Whitman High School, President of her nursing school class at Quincy City Hospital. Bessie worked as a registered nurse at the Brockton Hospital for 20 years. She was active in the Charity Club and Couples Club and a long standing member of the Whitman United Methodist Church. Bessie enjoyed knitting, crocheting and working on the church fairs. Bessie and Clint enjoyed camping and traveled to the National Parks and Grand Canyon, as well as Canada and Florida; she loved the time spent on Cape Cod with family. She was a wonderful cook and was famous for cooking dinners for her family on Sunday’s and Holiday’s. Her family and church were the center of her life. A memorial service will be held on Monday April 15th at 10:30 AM in the United Methodist Church 503 South Ave Whitman. Burial will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman. The family is grateful to the Colony House in Abington for the wonderful, loving care given to Bessie over the last several years. In lieu of flowers donations may be given to Whitman United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 503 South Ave, Whitman, MA 02382 or to the Colony House Activities Dept., 277 Washington St, Abington, MA 02351.

Peter Joseph Roche, 74, of Whitman, died April 10th surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of 24 years to the late Ellen (Carter) Roche. Born and brought up in Ireland, son of the late Gary and Ellen (Bardon) Roche. Peter grew up in Ireland and moved to the United States in 1963 and has been a Whitman resident for 38 years. He worked as a factory worker for the Barbour Corporation in Brockton for many years. He enjoyed going to the Whitman Senior Center , delivering meals on wheels, collecting sports collectables, trips to Ireland and Maine also trips down to the local Dunkin Donut’s for coffee and was a NASCAR fan. Peter is survived by his loving children, William Stewart, Tanya Roche and her fiancé Kenneth Amaru, all of Whitman, Patricia Roche and her companion Scott Hogan of Maine, Tina Stewart and her companion Roger Wegman of Assonet, his brothers, Philip Roche, Patrick Roche and his wife Rose, John Roche and his wife Peggy all of Ireland, his grandson Joshua Hogan, his cat Spooky; many nieces, nephews and friends. He was also the brother of the late Francis Roche, Nora Storey and Marion Murray. His funeral services will be held on Tuesday April 16th at 8:15 from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth St. ( Rte 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Interment will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Dorothy V. Lee, 82, of Whitman, passed away, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday April 13th in the Kindred Hospital, Stoughton. She was born in Boston, grew up in South Boston and Dorchester. Dorothy was the daughter of the late Michael F. and Catherine (Arrigal) Lee. Dorothy has been a resident of Whitman for more than 50 years. She worked for a meat packing company as a machine operator in her younger years and was very active in her retired years. She enjoyed being with her family that she was very close to. Dorothy is survived by her devoted nephew Stephen Pittman and his wife Marge of Pembroke, as well as many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late John, Joseph and Michael Lee, Barbara Pittman and Catherine Neitche. Her services will be held on Wednesday April 17th at 11:00AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St (RTE 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman. Her burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visitation will be held one hour prior to her service from 10-11.

Brant Rock – Velma Adele (Greene) Ford passed away peacefully April 14, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Everett Carleton Ford, Jr. Born in Brockton, October 31, 1920 she was the daughter of the late Percy and Lucy (Maxwell Durnion) Greene. Velma, better known as Adele, graduated from Whitman High School and Burdett College, and had worked at the Regal Shoe, Gurney Brothers Jewelers, and the Whitman School Department. Always very fashionable, she was a talented seamstress designing and sewing her own clothes and home décor. She also enjoyed drawing, cooking, reading and playing the piano. In her later years she purchased an organ and took lessons, learning to play that as well. She was a communicant of the First Congregational Church (UCC) of Whitman. Formerly of Whitman, she along with her husband, retired to Blue Fish Cove in Marshfield, the family summer home since she was a child, and they lived there for the past 30 years. She and her husband had traveled to Florida several winters and to Maine in the summer, but their true enjoyment was their beloved home in Blue Fish Cove, where they spent their happiest times with their friends and loved ones. She leaves her daughter Cheryl Tufankjian and her husband Charles of Duxbury; three grandchildren, Gregory Tufankjian and his wife Ellen of Wellesley, David Tufankjian and his wife Evelena of Duxbury and Rosemary Tufankjian Flaherty and her husband Edward of Duxbury. She also leaves seven great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael of Wellesley, Calista, Sophia and David, Jr. of Duxbury and Ani and Charles of Duxbury. Visiting hours will be held Sunday April 21 from 4-7 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, with her funeral service to be held Monday April 22 at 11 AM in the First Congregational Church, 519 Washington Street, Whitman. Burial will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Otis Campbell, 66, of Whitman, formerly of Foxboro, died unexpectedly, on Thursday April 18th at his home. He was the former husband of Jeanne M. (Hawkins) Campbell and the son of the late Otis and Doris (Horton) (Campbell) Lasky. Otis attended King Philips High School in Wrentham. He worked as a truck mechanic and truck driver for the Roadlinx Transportation Corporation in Randolph for 35 years He lived in Foxboro for 20 years, before moving to Whitman 10 years ago. Otis enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He is survived by his sons, Shaun Campbell of Whitman, William Campbell of Foxboro, his brother Paul Lasky of North Attleboro, his sisters Betty Ryan of North Carolina, Maud Olivia of Brighton and Alice Brown of Indiana; also many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late, Robert and David Lasky, John Campbell, Joann Tyo, Carol Campbell and Cynthia Buttermer. By request of the family, services have been omitted and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Whitman – Stephen C. Parent 57 a lifelong resident of Whitman died Wednesday May 8 after a brave battle against cancer. Born in Quincy and raised in Whitman he was the beloved son of the late Armand C. and Alice (Mathisen) Parent and had attended Whitman schools. He had worked several years as a foreman for the former Fabrica Conveyor Manufacturing Company of Milton. Steve liked the challenge of a good pool game and enjoyed his trips to the casinos. He loved animals and “scratch tickets” and had spent many enjoyable hours riding his motorcycle. He had also competed in the boxing ring. However his greatest joy was his son John, whom he adored and had constantly smiled when talking about him. Stephen had fought an especially brave battle against cancer and had selflessly volunteered for cancer drug testing in order to conceivably help others. He is survived by his loving son John R. Parent of Whitman, his siblings John W. Parent and his wife Linda of Halifax, Mary C. Young and her husband Paul of Whitman, and Francine M. Howard and her husband Daniel of Norfolk. He is also survived by his longtime companion Helen Ledwell and her children Joshua and Johanna as well as his nieces and nephews Joey, Matthew, Nicole, Ashley and David. His services will be held Tuesday May 14 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9 AM in Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Whitman – Janice E. (Barkhouse) Phinney 73, a resident died Tuesday May 28 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of 25 years to James E. Phinney.

Born and raised in Boston she was the daughter of the late Chester and Thelma (Costa) Barkhouse. She had attended Boston schools, graduated in 1959 and had remained in the Boston area until her move to the South Shore.

She had been a resident of Whitman for over 35 years and was a longtime communicant of the Holy Ghost Church where she had sung in the church choir for several years.

Janice was a family oriented woman and had enjoyed bowling.

In addition to her husband James she is survived by her children Patti Dauksevicz and her husband Peter of Hanover, Kathleen Benton and her husband Scott of Whitman, David McGough and his wife Linda of Rockland and William McGough of Whitman, her brother Richard Barkhouse of Medford. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 nieces.

Her funeral service will be held Saturday June 1 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9 AM in Holy Ghost Church. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Friday May 31 from 2-4 PM.

Whitman – B. Jean (French) Laaperi 83, formerly of Whitman, passed away at home on Sunday June 2 in Port Orange, Florida surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Alvin O. Laaperi.

She was the daughter of the late Gordon and Edith (King) French, and a graduate of Whitman High School.

Jean had been a friendly and familiar face in the Whitman community working for over thirty years in the Whitman Post Office. She had been a respected member of the Eastern Star for over 50 years.

She is survived by her loving children John Laaperi of Scituate, Diane Pizzano of Plymouth, Deborah Pini of Jamestown, RI, Marie Emery of Port Orange, FL and Ellen Souza of Whitman, her sister Phyllis Andrews of Hanson. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Whitman – Mary L. (Hardy) Thompson 66 died Saturday June 15, surrounded by her loving family, in Tufts Medical Center, Boston after complications due to leukemia. She was the beloved wife of 43 years to Richard “Dick” Thompson.

Born in Boston, the oldest of ten children, and raised in Dorchester she was the daughter of the late Louis J. and Rita C. (Halligan) Hardy and a graduate of Boston Schools.

Mary had been a resident of Whitman for over 41 years, where she and her husband Dick had raised their two children, and had been active communicants of the Holy Ghost Church. Mary had served for several years as secretary of the Religious Education Program at Holy Ghost.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her greatest joy came from the time spent with her family.

In addition to her husband Dick she is survived by her loving children Christopher Thompson and his wife Rebecca of Waltham and Kimberly Marasca and her husband Dennis, Jr. of North Reading, her 9 siblings Albert Hardy of Holbrook, Louis Hardy of Abington, James Hardy, Robert Hardy, Eileen Hardy and Rita Akins all of Wareham, Edith Kennedy of Stoughton, Edward Hardy of Hyde Park and Paul Hardy of FL. She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she adored, Luke, Noah, and Grace Thompson and Olivia Marasca as well as several nieces and nephews.

Her services will be held Wednesday June 19 at 9:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 10 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday June 18 from 4-8 PM.
